Navarro ISD Celebrates All Four Campuses Earning Prestigious Purple Star Designation
Geronimo, TX (September 19, 2024) – Navarro Independent School District (NISD) proudly announces that all four of its campuses have been awarded the esteemed Purple Star Designation by Governor Greg Abbott. This recognition acknowledges the district's unwavering commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families.
The Purple Star designation is a program established by the Texas Legislature through Senate Bill 1557, with the goal of highlighting schools that go above and beyond to meet the unique needs of these students.
“At Navarro ISD, we are deeply honored to receive the Purple Star designation for all campuses,” stated Mandy Epley, Superintendent of NISD. “Military families make tremendous sacrifices for our nation, and we are dedicated to ensuring their children feel welcomed, understood, and have every opportunity to excel in their education. We understand the unique challenges that come with military life, and we are honored to have the opportunity to serve these children and families.”
Every Navarro ISD school met the Purple Star Designation criteria by having a dedicated military liaison who advocates for military-connected students, their families, and staff on military-related issues, a web page specifically for military families, and a transition program that fosters an environment of belonging and connection from day one.
The district has also implemented various initiatives to ensure the growing number of military families and students feel valued, understood, and have access to the resources they need to succeed. Elementary Principal Laurel Wilson said, “Collaboration with our military school liaison has been key to fostering a stronger connection between military families and schools. Ms. Amanda Lindsey works to ensure students receive resources, referrals, and peer support to ensure military students succeed and we are grateful for her dedication.”
Wilson also highlighted that her campus looks forward to “purple out” day to raise awareness and show appreciation in celebration of Month of the Military Child, and giving special recognition to students of service members during Veterans Day ceremonies for their sacrifices as well.
Governor Abbott’s announcement highlighted a significant increase in Purple Star designations this year, reflecting the growing awareness of the unique challenges faced by military-connected students. Navarro ISD is honored to join other Texas Purple Star campuses in this commitment to excellence for our military families.
